Animation 17.8 Meiosis I and Mitosis Compared

Textbook Reference: Meiosis and Fertilization, p. 680

Let’s compare some events in mitosis with those in meiosis I. In prophase of meiosis I, homologous chromosomes pair, or synapse, allowing exchange of genetic material. In mitotic prophase, they do not.

In metaphase, chromosomes are dragged to the equatorial plate—as pairs of homologs in meiosis I and as individuals in mitosis.
